Narrative

Marriage record of Z. F. Dorton to Nancy S. Vaughn states that Zachariah was a widower.

Found no earlier marriage record for Zachariah in Russell county.

Even though Nancy died on Died June 22, 1866, the 1866 Russell County, Virginia  Death Index does not show a death record for her.

Margaret (Wiley) Long entered her union with Zachariah Dorton with one child from her previous marriage.  The 1870 Russell County census stated her name as Eden Long, female, 8yrs.  The 1880 Russell County census has her listed as Ibby E. Dorton, female, 18 yrs.  She has taken the Dorton name, did Zach adopt her?

Apparently there was one child born to the union of Zachariah Dorton and Sarah Osborn, Deborah C. Dorton about 1855 in Scott Co., Va.  They had been married 14 months at the time of Sarah's death.  It seems that Zachariah elected to leave his possible newborn child with Sarah's parents.  She is listed in the 1860 and 1870 census of Scott Co., VA in the household of Solomon and Henrietta Osborn.  In the 1880 census of Scott Co., VA she is living with her aunt Catherine Osborn and her grandmother, Henrietta, whom the census take lists as a Dorton.
